Winter Officially Begins

We thought we would treat you to one final blog post before the Christmas holidays. Although some parts of the country have already had snow did you know that it’s not officially the first day of winter until 22 December?

Name: Aphra Anderson

A bit about me: I am very into arts and crafts, I particularly like decorating themed cupcakes, embroidery and making cards/scrap booking. My favourite thing about being the Naturalmat Trade and Shop manager at is getting to work in environment where children are always around. All my favourite jobs have been focused on kids and I always enjoy visits from people with brand new babies.

My usual working day: My day mostly involves answering customer queries and giving them advice and information about all the items available on-line and in the shop. I am also responsible for and putting through customer orders.

One of my favourite items that we sell is the new Baby Bay, as it offers all the benefits of co-sleeping with none of the downsides. Also it can fit through doorways, so can just be wheeled to the next room when you want to keep an eye on your little one without disturbing their sleep.

My other favourite shop item is the large white American fleece. It is so soft and luxurious that I could happily spend a whole day stroking it.

Full name: Marie Taylor

A bit about me: I joined the Naturalmat team in January and get along really well with my colleagues. I think that they make it one of the best reasons to work for this organisation. Outside of work I enjoy socialising, going to Zumba classes and acting.

Usual working day: I’m the Naturalmat Online Marketing Manager. My typical day includes updating information on the Naturalmat website, devising our monthly marketing plan and generating new ideas for future promotions. I regularly monitor the number of visitors that the website receives and analyse other website statistics. It’s important that I pinpoint which marketing campaigns have been successful and where improvements could be made.

I am responsible for all Naturalmat social marketing, which even includes the Naturalmat blog. I create much of the communication that comes from Naturalmat and speak to relevant parties in order to raise the company’s profile both online and offline. I love my job as I have a real passion for marketing and I get to deal with fun things on a daily basis, such as activity on Facebook and getting the company nominated for awards.

Favourite Naturalmat product: I would have to say that my favourite item within the Naturalmat catalogue is our Luxe Pocket Mattress. I love the soft range and I think that they are incredibly luxurious mattresses!

Usual working day: I start my days by organising the tools and materials that I am going to be using. Our production manager provides me with the orders that I will be working on. At the moment I’m working on a Stokke order so I am mainly focusing on making Coco and Latex Mats. I really like the people that I work with at Naturalmat. I think we all have similar personalities and interests, such as different bands and music that we like.

A bit about me: I’ve worked at Naturalmat for over four years now and working with the rest of the Naturalmat team is what makes my job so enjoyable. Outside of work I enjoy jet skiing and walking my dogs.

My usual working day: I’m the Naturalmat Production Manager so I deal with processing most of the orders. I go through all of our current orders and allocate the work accordingly. Good communication is an essential part of my job. I need to be kept informed of any necessary changes and it is important that I relay any specific details onto to the rest of the team. I keep a close eye on stock levels to ensure that we have enough materials to complete all of our current orders on time. I think there is a good group of people here at Naturalmat. We are a really friendly team and it feels like a bit like a family as we are all close and get along really well.

Favourite Naturalmat product: It’s difficult to pick a favourite product but I think I would have to say that our Luxe Pocket sprung Mattresses are some of our very best mattresses.

Full name: Andrew Hall

A bit about me:

I gained the skills necessary for my role through training on the job initially at the British Water Bed Company. I later became a self-employed upholsterer and started doing work for Naturalmat Director Mark Tremlett. I eventually came to work directly for the company over three years ago. Outside of work my hobbies include archery, running, cycling, and swimming. I also enjoy climbing and spending time with my children.

My usual day:

My my specialist skills lie in mattress making and upholstery. At the moment I’m working on a sample of a split double adult mattress with a mattress topper. I spend the hours cutting and sewing fabric to make the full range of adult and marine mattresses. I think there are a lot of nice people that work within Naturalmat. I especially like the fact that I can plan my own working day too. There is a relaxed working atmosphere here and a sense of flexibility.

Spice Girl Melanie Brown (aka Mel B or Scary Spice) gave birth to baby girl Madison Brown Belafonte at the beginning of September. Meet the Team Part 2

Welcome to week two Meet the Naturalmat team. We hope you enjoy learning a bit more about us.

Name: Chris Rose

A bit about me:

I was born in Gloucester but moved to Crediton in Devon when I was young and later on in life raised my family in Exeter. I’ve had several jobs where I’ve worked as a machinist and a number of them have even been alongside Annie Cudmore. Outside of work I enjoy shopping, looking after my grandchildren and listening to music from the 60s and 70s.

My Usual day:

I’ve worked as a machinist for Naturalmat for about 10 months now. Our production manager Colin Bray provides me with the purchase orders at the start of the day and Annie and I work out a plan of who is best suited to deal with each of the different tasks. At the moment much of the work that I am dealing with is for USA mattresses. I really enjoy the various tasks that I am responsible for and I have a good relationship my colleagues. I think these factors make Naturalmat a great place to work. It’s good to see the business growing and doing well in the hotel, domestic and marine markets. The days are never boring at Naturalmat and I like the fact that I feel a part of the whole process and not on a conveyer belt, which can often be the case with some companies. The Naturalmat team almost feels like family to me, I normally take my breaks at the same time as the rest of the team and Annie and I have a chat throughout the day. I’m very busy at the moment so the time goes by really fast. Annie and I are making sure we are up to date with things and sometimes even stay a bit later than usual to ensure that we don’t fall behind.

What is your favourite item within the Naturalmat catalogue?

I love all of the baby mattresses that we do in cot bed sizes, whether it’s a Coco, Latex or Mohair Mat, I think they all are fantastic. I really like the fact that Naturalmat’s baby mattresses are made by hand in Devon and the lambswool contained within them has been sourced from local farms in the West Country.

Here at Naturalmat we thought our customers may want to understand a bit more about what we do on a daily basis, and more importantly who the key members of our team are that are responsible for creating our fantastic products. Over the next few weeks the Naturalmat blog is going to be dedicated to intrducing the team. Welcome to Part 1 and we hope you enjoy learning a bit more about us.

Name: Annie Cudmore

A bit about me:

I was born near Plymouth and I’ve had an interest in machining since I left school. Outside of work I love shopping, socialising and listening to music.

An average working day:

I’ve worked as a cutter for Naturalmat for about 12 months now. My day normally starts with picking up the days purchase orders from the production manager Colin Bray. Colin usually provides me any important details about the orders and cutting instructions before I get started. I then review the deadlines for each item and prioritise my day accordingly. Throughout the day you will usually find me either cutting the material or sat behind my machine happily sewing away and singing along to the radio. It’s great that the tasks I’m given at can vary greatly from day to day. This can range from creating something for hoteliers, to our UK and USA baby ranges or possibly making samples to be used at trade shows.

My colleague Chris Rose and I are very close and work well as a team. We help each other out when it’s needed and she is just the type of person that that you would want sat next to each day at work. I really enjoy my days at Naturalmat and like that we deal with a broad range of products. I’ve been taught quite a bit by my colleague Andrew, in terms of different sewing techniques are best to use when creating items for marine customers. Most of the team arrange to take our breaks together. We all have gotten to know each other really well throughout the year and are able to have a joke with one another, which keeps things fun and interesting until it’s time to go home. We’re all kept well informed of the level of demand of requests and if needs be I’m happy to stay later in the evening to make sure that I am on target and all orders are delivered on time.

What is your favourite item within the Naturalmat catalogue?

I would definitely recommend the travel mat. I’m always talking about how great it is and that people should have a look at it on the Naturalmat website. I especially like the fact that it’s made from natural fibres, compared to other baby travel mattresses on the market which can be made from synthetic materials and offer poor breathability.

Relief for Asthma Sufferers

Scientists have come across a potential new treatment for delayed asthma attacks, which can often occur several hours after exposure to allergens. Researchers found that blocking sensory nerve functions stopped a late asthmatic response in mice and rats. These results have helped scientists to gain a greater understanding of asthma, especially as half of people with asthma experience delayed symptoms.

A late asthmatic response happens because allergens trigger sensory nerves in the airways. These nerves then set off a chain reaction which causes the airways to narrow. If these findings translate to humans, it will mean that drugs called anticholinergics could be used to treat asthma patients who suffer from delayed attacks.

Asthma attacks can often happen at night, three to eight hours after the sufferer comes into contact with allergens such as grass pollen or house-dust mites.

However, until these new findings are translated in humans there is something else that can be used that would greatly benefit asthma suffers. Naturalmat wins contract for biggest hotel opening in New York in 2011

They currently have three airport locations at Heathrow, Gatwick & Schipol, but are expanding across the pond with what will be the largest new hotel opening in New York, just three blocks west of Times Square in 2011.

Finally the news you that have all been waiting for- Naturalmat have created a new baby mattress!

The Baby Cashmere Mat contains an organic coir core, of which the coconuts used are grown sustainably on fair trade farms. The organic coir is surrounded by cashmere, mohair and layers of organic lambswool.

The cashmere used works to insulate in the winter and keep children cool during the summer. This helps to dissipate moisture and perspiration away from the body ensuring that babies get the rest that they really need.

On 15 May the world celebrated the International Day of Families. The theme for 2011 was ‘Family: resources and responsibilities in a changing world’. At Naturalmat, we agree that special attention should be paid to our families. We live in a completely different world compared to the generation before us. We now have much more developed opinions regarding equality between women and men within families, whether this is on the subject of sharing of domestic responsibilities or employment opportunities.

National Stop Snoring Week runs from 9- 15 May. You may be a snorer, or even worse, you may be one of those unfortunate people who have to put up with the sound of someone else snoring every night. Nevertheless snoring is a noisy and big problem, especially in a relationship.

We all know how annoying snoring is, but there isn’t always a simple solution. So what’s the cause of snoring? Well, there are more reasons than you might realise. Eating too much, drinking a lot of alcohol and allergies can all block your airways, which can stop you from sleeping the whole night through.

This year the focus of the National Stop Snoring campaign will be on couples, who due to the severity of the snoring problem in their homes, have resorted to sleeping in separate bedrooms. Researchers are very curious to know exactly why partners do it, and most importantly who is and isn't happy with the arrangement. The Perfect Mother's Day

Don’t forget its Mother’s Day this Sunday. You may be a little stumped for ideas so let Naturalmat help paint a picture of what our ideal Mother’s Day would contain…

Amazon Bridge Opens Rainforest to Development

The new bridge is designed to connect the undeveloped towns but can it is be achieved without damaged the world greatest rainforest?

The new Manaus-Iranduba Bridge will be whopping 3,595m long, when completed in November will be a quicker and more convenient free alternative. Currently crossing the river by ferry can reportedly take half an hour and cost up to R100 (about £37).

The Bridge is one of many proposed developments in the rainforest in order to bring more economic opportunities for Amazonas by connecting more remote areas such as Iranduba, Manacapuru and Novo Airão. It is a welcoming addition for local people and their politicians.

However Scientists, environmentalists and campaigners question whether it can be completed without damaging the world famous Amazon Rainforest. Some claim the bridge will be a repeat of the BR-364 Highway built in the 1980s, which resulted in large deforestation. 75% of Amazon deforestation happens near to roads to allow access for loggers. This coupled with other developments such as new gas pipelines, roads and rising populations, could open up the rainforest to further destruction. It is difficult to see how this development cannot have a negative impact on the Rainforest.

This development is estimated to cost $400m and will be toll-free.

Baby Show Go

Despite to turn in the weather, things at Naturalmat have really been heating up.

Mark and Peter, our directors have been gearing up for the launch of the Naturalmat/Stokke collaboration to be exhibited for the first time at the London Baby Show. For those of you who have never heard of it, the London Baby Show is the 'place to be' for the who's who of the baby world. Large and small, baby companies gather together for this one weekend to ruffle their feathers and show people what they are really about.

This year, teaming up with Stokke - a household name for baby furniture, the Naturalmat gurus are delighted to be making the organic mattress accessible to all babies and children, ensuring that all parents can comforted knowing their child is getting the best night's sleep, naturally. Meanwhile in our shop...

Yesterday we had the largest turn-out for Story Time EVER! Mummies and children came from all over London to hear Eva enchant with her magical story-telling. It was great to see so many faces returning and new. By the end, there wasn't a crumb in sight!

Eva and I have also been busy bees working on our new website to be launched next week. It has been a great experience putting it together just as we like it and believe our customers will too.

Story Time Fun

Yesterday was the launch of the first Story Time event in our shop, and wow wow wow!

Just moments before, as we set out the cookies and poured the milk, all of us in the Naturalmat shop began to get last-minute jitters. We suddenly wondered whether anyone would turn up. We started to wonder - did we hand out enough fliers, call enough mothers,? Was there anything we had forgotten to do?

But lo and behold the clock turned 4 and mothers and children began to pour in. How lovely the sound of little children giggling are... and how wonderful to see their eyes light up at the sight of cookies and milk in pretty lavender cups.

Our brand manager Eva very kindly offered her services as book reader and boy did she deliver! (We now know she could fall back on a career in child care.) All of the kids sat around, staring up at her silently waiting as if they knew it was going to be a great story. As she shook her hands around so did they, and as she read they looked up at her in awe. At one point, one of the toddlers Kitty decided it was time to take a snoop around the shop. Most of us (myself included) were too busy listening to the story to even notice her sticking her head in the cupboard and grabbing another cookie (watch out Mum!)

When the story ended, everyone stayed to chat and get to know each other. It was lovely to meet some of the mums in our area and to see them meet each other. By the end of the hour there wasn't a drop of milk or a crumb of cookie left in sight. What a wonderful way to bring together the mums and kids in our area. We can't wait to do it all again next week!

The biggest event of Organic Fortnight will be the Organic Food Festival taking place on Saturday the 12^th and Sunday the 13^th of September at Bristol’s scenic Harbourside. In association with the Soil Association and support from Yeo Valley it is Europe’s largest showcase of the organic community, with hundreds of organic products, an organic bar, cooking demonstrations with Raymond Blanc, Barny Haughton and other top chefs, children’s taste workshops and a lively Street Food Bazaar. With a special area for fun and games for children this is will be a great day for the whole family!

Monday Monday

Typically, Mondays is not everyone's favourite days. After weekends like the one just gone when we all get reminded that it is indeed still summer, (easy to forget when wool is still featuring in the front of my closet) getting motivated back into work is about as easy as motivating yourself to go on that 1 hour run you committed to after the second helping of Sunday pudding.

A glimpse out of the window inspires pains of jelousy to all of those strolling by. How on Earth do they make a living? What fantastic job allows all of the wanderers bellow to stride past so carelessly taking in the sunshine on the most dreaded of days?? Perhaps they are victims of the global recession. Surely even the unemployed will wake up late and smirk remembering the Monday blues while they decide to have breakfast in bed.

Here at Naturalmat, we have decided to rebel against the Mondays (well, at least for this week.) One of our co-founders Peter decided to keep quiet about his Birthday today, but in a small office secrets are short-lived.

We are having a Birthday Party!!
Snuck off to Hummingbird for cupcakes and candles, (red velvet, yummm! :P) and Eva used her calligraphy skills to make a lovely card. Whether Peter likes it or not (we do hope he does) its a celebration! Monday blues? Pah! We're having tea and cupcakes. And from the cool inside of the office, with the sun streaming in, we will not have to worry about melted frosting, overcrowded parks or skin damage.

Summer Lovin'

The summer months tend to be the time when work is put on the back burner and (surely if you live in England,) our heads are filled with holidays, sunshine and hot weather.

For those who decided to go eco-chic this year and stay local, the promising summer forecast that the lovely weather woman on GMTV gave has not held up. Plans for BBQ's, and Pimms in the park has been somewhat washed out (quite literally!)

Here in the Naturalmat headquarters, it seems that many of us have planned our holidays last minute thinking we would be enjoying a sunny local summer only to wake up to clouds day after day.

So while I am escaping to the Middle East (yes, I would like to roast please), our brand manager Eva is escaping to the Greek island Skiathos, and our store manager is off the Morocco for surfing! As hard as we tried, embracing the British summer this year just hasn't happening - as guilty as our green consciences may feel.

In the meantime, watching the raindrops slide down the window staring out onto the sad streets of Notting Hill just waiting for its annual weekend of fun, we can't help but notice just how many people have planned ahead and fled the country. Credit crunch? We think not.

For those of you who planned ahead and ignored the recession bells, swine-flu craze and all other obstacles we salute you. Perhaps you are away right now, perhaps you are lying on a beach, feet in the sand with the sound of your little ones making sand castles off in the distance.

Perhaps you are smart like our co-founder Mark who just strolled into the office today tanned and smiley from his family trip to Croatia.

Wherever you are or however you have escaped (or not) we would love to hear your experiences of summer so far this year. Any swine-flu hold ups? How do you handle traveling with the little ones? Let us know.

No Tears Over Spilt Milk

This Autumn sees the launch of Naturalmat Story Time, with Random House Children’s Books providing stories from their newest and loveliest collections.

Here at Naturalmat we believe customer satisfaction is essential. We want to know that our product is actually achieving what it is meant to do, getting your babies to sleep easier and more naturally.

In the past we have heard wonderful reviews about our products, but we think it is about time to ask again. We know there are many more parents out there who are finding it hard..around a quarter of children under 5 in the UK have difficulty sleeping - either refusing to go to bed or waking up in the night.

Say goodnight to sleep deprivation

Most new parents believe that sleep deprivation comes automatically with parenthood. Many parents spend long hours – at all hours - walking the floor with their baby. They soothe, feed, and go the extra mile on little or no sleep to comfort their crying baby, but it doesn’t have to be that way.

The first month of life, baby needs roughly 16 hours of sleep each day; at three months old, baby needs 15 hours of sleep. At this age, an infant’s sleep cycles usually consist of only 50-60 minutes. By the time baby is about 4 months old, he or she should be sleeping between 6-8 hours a night. At 6 months, that number rises to between 10-12 hours and stays there through the toddler years.
