Doing Our Bit for the Planet

We all aim to do our bit for the planet by recycling whatever we can. On a weekly basis we sort our plastics and paper from rest of our household waste, but what are we meant to do when it’s time to dispose of an old mattress? Most would drop their mattress off at the local landfill, where inevitably much of the bed would never decompose. However, innovative Devon based mattress manufacturer Naturalmat have created a range of handmade organic mattresses that are made entirely from renewable raw materials.

One of the most important natural components within Naturalmat’s range of organic handmade mattresses is organic wool which is sourced exclusively from Devon, Dorset and Somerset Soil Association certified farms. The wool is processed on the edge of Dartmoor using water from the River Dart. An extract of essential oils is added to the wool which consists of lavender, lemon and eucalyptus. This renders the wool anti dust mite (making Naturalmat mattress ideal for allergy sufferers). In addition wool is naturally fire retardant, meaning that all mattress tuftings are chemical free.

Coir (coconut fibre) is the prime component within Naturalmat organic mattresses. Only Naturalmat use certified organic coir which comes from the only certified organic coconut plantation in the world. Coir ensures unbeatable airflow, superior spring and excellent support to promote healthy and natural sleep.

The natural latex used with Naturalmat mattresses is tapped directly from rubber tree. Once collected, it is pumped full of air to create a foamy white froth, before being set in a large oven. The natural latex layer provides an immensely supportive core that is naturally breathable and it is also totally hypoallergenic.

Horsehair is one of the most highly prized materials in the upholstery industry. It has long been used in mattress making for its incredible resilience and superior spring, Naturalmat needle horsehair onto hessian which provides extra strength and protection for the springs, whilst still allowing flexibility for independent movement.

Cashmere is one of the softest and most luxurious natural fibres available. The loft and soft spring provided by cashmere gives an added dimension of comfort. Like wool, cashmere has inherent properties of ventilation and insulation.

Cotton used within Naturalmat mattresses is grown according to Fair Trade policies and is certified by Control Union to Global Organic Textile Standards (GOTS).  Pesticides are avoided and the cotton used therefore free from chemicals. Cotton has a unique ability to ventilate and control humidity and perspiration, which enables the body to keep an even temperature throughout the night.
